Desk Report:
‘Terrorist’ Sarwar Hossain alias Babla (43) who participated in an election campaign with a BNP candidate in Chittagong was shot dead. He died at a private hospital in the city around 6:30 pm on Wednesday.
However, BNP says Sarwar is not one of them. Hundreds of people participated in the campaign. Police sources said that terrorist Sajjad Hossain alias Chhota Sajjad was the one who shot his opponent, terrorist Sarwar Hossain, in a bid to establish dominance with him.
Earlier in the afternoon, Sarwar participated in a campaign with BNP candidate and city BNP convener Ershad Ullah in the Chalitali area of the city. In this, three people named Ershad Ullah, Sarwar and Shanto were injured in the shooting. Sarwar died among them. Police said that Sarwar has 15 cases against him, including extortion, weapons and murder.
When asked, Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahedul Kabir told Prothom Alo that Sarwar, who was injured in the shooting, has died.
Earlier, on March 30, an attempt was made to kill Sarwar by opening fire on a private car in the Baklia Access Road area of the city. At that time, two people in the private car died on the spot. Sarwar fortunately survived that day. Later, the accused arrested in this case told the police in their statements that Sarwar was shot on the orders of ‘terrorist’ Sajjad Hossain alias Chhota Sajjad, who was focused on expanding dominance in the area.
Chhota Sajjad is a follower of Sajjad Ali, who is known as a fugitive Shibir cadre abroad. At one time, Sarwar Hossain was also his follower. Sarwar moved away from them after 2015.
On July 12, 2000, eight people, including six Chhatra League activists, were killed in a terrorist attack in Bahaddarhat. Sajjad Ali (Senior Sajjad) was convicted in the case filed in that incident but was later acquitted by the High Court. After that, he fled abroad. However, he did not stop his terrorist activities. He has been conducting crimes in Bayezid, Panchlaish, Chandgaon and Hathazari through his forces from abroad. Sajjad Hossain (Younger Sajjad) has been conducting all his activities.
Sarwar got married a month ago. Several leaders including BNP leader Ershad Ullah were present at his wedding. Sarwar was seen attending various BNP rallies after he was released on bail from prison after August 5 last year.
When asked, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that BNP has nothing to do with this incident. Hundreds of people participated in the BNP candidate’s public relations campaign. When Sarwar participated there, he was shot due to a previous feud between the two terrorist groups.
Ershad Ullah is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong city. Mohammad Shahed, former general secretary of the Nagar Jubo Dal, told Prothom Alo that doctors have said that Ershad Ullah is out of danger. He was shot with a shrapnel bullet in his stomach.
