Smoking banned for young people in Maldives

The Maldives has banned smoking for all young people born on or after January 1, 2007. The ban is the only country in South Asia to ban tobacco across generations. The ban came into effect on Saturday (November 1). The new law will make it illegal for those under the age limit to buy and sell tobacco.

Anyone caught selling tobacco products to a minor will now face a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa. Additionally, a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa will be imposed for using vaping. The ban will apply to all types of tobacco products and retailers will be required to verify the age of a person before selling tobacco products. The same rule will apply to visitors to the Maldives on holiday, reports bdnews24.com.
