Several media websites in the country suddenly went down on Tuesday evening (November 18). Readers complained that when they try to access the websites of the media, they see a message like ‘Cloudflare Error’.
Initially, technology experts said that the cause of this disaster was a temporary outage of the Cloudflare service.
In this regard, Professor Dr. B. M. Mainul Hossain, Director of the Institute of Information Technology, Dhaka University, told Ajker Patrika that this is due to a problem with Cloudflare. It should be fixed in a while.
Cloudflare, which is widely used around the world, provides various services to websites, including cyber security, content delivery network (CDN), and domain name system (DNS). Several online media outlets in the country depend on Cloudflare to run their websites. As a result, if the service is disrupted, there are obstacles in accessing the websites.
According to technology analysts, when Cloudflare goes down, two effects are usually seen. One is that the website’s server is fine, but the site cannot be accessed due to a problem with Cloudflare’s network. The second is that the website is slow or does not load at all due to the CDN and DNS services being down.
Dr. B. M. Mainul Hossain said that the same is seen in today’s incident.
Website users said that since 6 pm, the websites of various media outlets including Ajker Patika, Daily Star, BDNews 24, Bangla Tribune have not been accessible. Although the websites’ own servers were fine.
Technology experts said that when major CDN and DNS service providers go down, it affects millions of websites not only in Bangladesh but also worldwide. After the problem is resolved within a short time, the websites start working normally.
